This article was posted on February 10, 2017, by Insulation Corporation of America (ICA) – a Women-Owned manufacturer of Geofoam and Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), which is commonly but mistakenly referred to as Styrofoam™. You’ve just finished creating a masterful piece of art. Standing tall and proud after all the time, hard work and talent it took, you’re now confronted with a nerve-wracking situation – how to safely get it to its new destination. And at 8′ 6″ tall and 375 lbs, it is no small feat. Jesse Price of The Quondam Tree had just created his largest piece to date and was about to make a 200 mile journey to New York City. He needed to find something that would assure him the proper protection he was looking for to keep his sculpture safe during travel. What material would be versatile, easy enough to mobilize, cost efficient and offer a safe cushion for his prized sculpture? EPS foam of course!
“What made EPS ideal for me was that it is lightweight and at the same time very sturdy…When creating my sculptures, I take great care when choosing the materials it will be made out of, so it just made sense to do the same with the packaging,” Jesse said. “Given the size of this sculpture and its cost, I needed to make absolute certain that it would reach its destination safely, and so the search began for the best material to make that happen. Luckily it didn’t take long to find ICA online and even more fortunate for me it was only a short two-hour drive away!”
After making that two-hour drive, Jesse arrived at ICA. While here, he was able to talk to our Queen of Polystyrene about working with EPS foam. “Thankfully ICA also sells the tools needed to cut and work the foam, so I was able to create a perfect fitting pocket for the sculpture to fit into without it moving around and damaging the valuable piece of art meant to travel inside.” With patient precision and a hot knife, Jesse created a “pocket” within the foam (two 18″ x 48″ x 96″ pieces of 1# EPS) in which his wooden sculpture could snugly sit. With EPS as its cushion, Jesse’s sculpture made it safely to NYC! “Working with the foam was amazingly easy and has proved to be one of the best finds I’ve come across. From now on, any sculpture I create will be shipped inside of EPS foam!”
As if that wasn’t enough to make us smile, we were also thrilled to hear how pleased Jesse was with our customer service department. “The above and beyond customer service provided by the ICA team was in wonderful contrast to what has become the norm when dealing with most companies. They took the time to educate me on the tools I would be using to cut/shape the foam as well as answer the many questions I had about the foam in the first place, to make sure it was exactly what I needed. Their follow up and genuine care about doing a good job was very refreshing and will be welcome when purchasing my next order.”
Thank you for all of the kind words, Jesse, and best of luck to you and your work! We are so pleased our foam could be a part of this journey and are looking forward to your future endeavors!
