Skating with Geofoam: Enhancing Rink Stability and Safety

Explore how ICA's Geofoam facilitated the construction of Hartford, CT's inaugural skatepark, offering ideal support for ramps and levels.

Geofoam is “sick”. In skaters terms, that means amazing!

Hartford, Connecticut gets its first official skatepark. The platform above I-84 was being used as an area for skaters, but under the direction of the city’s architect, Mark Tamaccio and various interest groups, the city opened up its 1st skatepark on July 12, 2014. This park is open 24/7, 365 days a year to skateboarders, bikers, rollerbladers and artists.

The park construction by Stantec and Who Skates was achieved by using Geofoam to make ramps and various levels. Geofoam is expanded polystyrene, or EPS, which is commonly but incorrectly referred to as Styrofoam™. The lightweight feature of EPS made it the perfect solution for construction about the tunnel of I-84. In addition, the ease of working with Geofoam saves labor, time, and money. The first load of Geofoam was delivered at the end of May and the park opened in the beginning of July.

Geofoam proves to be successful for many different types of projects, from road construction to bridges to skate parks, water parks, and golf courses. So how can Geofoam save you time and money on your next project?
