Job Site Innovations: Enhancing Productivity with Portability

Sustainability

Movile techWith technology being known for its portability, contractors have been progressively using basic devices on the job, including smartphones, laptops and tablets.  A Texas A&M survey found that “there’s growing confidence in technology as builders are increasingly transitioning to use of digital spreadsheets on the job site” and that “contractors are more receptive to IT solutions than ever before, even if their companies are not budgeting for them yet.” The authors of the Texas A&M survey expect that construction professionals will depend on drones and wearable technology capable of detecting motion and taking photos capable of syncing with a smartphone.

For plumbing contractors, they are able to log their calls and emails on their smartphones, allowing them to reduce the amount of time spent checking in with dispatchers. Other contractors are able to use their device to document things like homes and buildings that suffer a damage from fire or water, and can provide those images to insurance adjusters almost immediately. Taking notes in the field has also saved a lot of time and allows the contractor to easily share the notes right away through email without the delay of having to go back to the office.

Apps have also lent a helping hand in making things easier for contractors. There are apps made for roofing contractors which allow them to calculate aerial measurements and estimation apps which also increases the efficiency of contractors on site.
Another important factor when carrying your portable device, is the GPS function. Workers who go from site to site can use the GPS software to plan their day efficiently to get where they need to be and having the email function available or even your smartphone allows you to keep in touch with the office in real-time.
