After a period of 15 years it was found that the XPS had 18.9% water absorption (by volume) while the EPS only reached 4.8%. This translated into a retention of just 52% of XPS’s initial R-value while the EPS insulation retained 94%. After conditioning the samples for 30 days at 72°F (22°C) and 50% RH, the EPS has dropped to 0.7% water absorption while XPS only dropped to 15.7%.
