EPS Foam Recycling: From Sustainability to Creativity

Witness the creative use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) scraps in providing buoyancy for human-powered vehicles at The Kinetic Sculpture Race. Experience the excitement of this unique festival held in Oregon, where innovation and ingenuity collide in a celebration of art, engineering, and human-powered creativity.

Kinetic Sculpture Race at Da Vinci Days
Expanded polystyrene cycled and floated its way in The Kinetic Sculpture Race!

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam was used to super-insulate the foundation and to cover the roof sheathing of the passive Karuna House built by Hammer & Hand. Great efforts were made to plan efficiently in order minimize the amount of waste. The small amount of excess EPS that was generated was put to a fun interactive use!

The Da Vinci Days Festival in Corvallis, Oregon is a festival of art, science and technology. The Kinetic Sculpture Race is a central feature of this event. It is a two day wacky race of human powered “vehicles” on a 15 mile course that includes a mud bog, a sand dune and the Willamette River! EPS was engineered into the design  for its buoyancy attributes and kept this 12 foot structure afloat for the river ride!
